Jaguars’ Star Travis Hunter Suffers Knee Injury, Placed on Injured Reserve

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars’ offense has been dealt a severe setback with the news that dynamic two-way player Travis Hunter will be placed on Injured Reserve after sustaining a right knee injury in practice.

The injury, which occurred during a non-contact defensive drill on Thursday, will sideline the electrifying rookie for a minimum of four games. The team is awaiting further test results to determine the full extent of the damage and a potential timeline for his return.

A Major Setback for a Rising Star

Hunter’s injury comes at a challenging time for the Jaguars. He was fresh off a breakout performance against the Los Angeles Rams in London before the bye week, where he showcased his offensive prowess with eight catches for 104 yards and his first NFL touchdown.

Coach Liam Coen expressed his disappointment while emphasizing a forward-looking perspective.

“We’re currently assessing the injury to determine the best course of action,” Coen stated. “Feel bad for the guy, for the kid, for our team… but he’s in good spirits right now. Minor setback for a major comeback. That’s just the way it’s got to be.”

The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner has been a revelation for Jacksonville. On the season, he has accumulated 28 catches for 298 yards and a touchdown on offense, while also contributing 15 tackles and three pass breakups on defense. His versatility had become a cornerstone of the team’s strategy, as he played 67% of offensive snaps and 36% of defensive snaps.

How the Jaguars Plan to Adapt

Hunter’s absence creates a significant void, particularly at wide receiver. He was ascending into the team’s primary receiving target, a move accelerated by his own playmaking ability and the struggles of other receivers.

“This is definitely not ideal timing,” Coach Coen admitted. “Not that any injuries are ever ideal timing, but I have a lot of belief in Travis as a person, as a competitor, to come back better than ever.”

The Jaguars’ receiver room is already battling injuries, with Brian Thomas Jr. (shoulder), Dyami Brown (shoulder), and Tim Patrick (groin) all nursing ailments. To compensate, the team is expected to elevate a receiver from the practice squad, with Austin Trammell, Tim Jones, and Chandler Brayboy as the likely candidates.

The silver lining for Jacksonville lies on the defensive side. With Hunter out, the team is confident in its cornerback depth, with Montaric Brown and Jarrian Jones prepared to step into his role.

Coen remains optimistic about the team’s ability to rally, recalling the offensive configurations used during training camp when Hunter was focused on defense.

“We go back to training camp days… It was Dyami, BT, and Parker [Washington] rolling at the receiver positions and did some really good things,” Coen said. “So I have a lot of confidence in these guys that it’s a great opportunity for all of us to work through a little adversity.”

The earliest Hunter could potentially return to the field is for the Jaguars’ Week 13 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
