New Castle, IN – The Indiana-based commissary for the beloved Jack’s Donuts chain has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, revealing staggering liabilities exceeding $14 million.

The official filing was submitted this week in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Court documents paint a dire financial picture, listing the company’s total liabilities at over $14 million against personal property assets of just $1.4 million.

This legal action comes amid rising debts to multiple creditors. A significant claim comes from Carter Logistics, a transport company that had previously sued Jack’s Donuts of Indiana Commissary LLC in April. The lawsuit alleged the donut company failed to pay over $700,000 for delivery services throughout central Indiana.

It’s crucial to understand that Chapter 11 bankruptcy is not a sign of immediate closure. Instead, it is a form of court-supervised financial restructuring. It allows a business to continue operating while it develops a plan to reorganize its debts and pay creditors over time.

The financial troubles are linked to a major operational shift the company made two years ago. In 2022, the commissary opened a large-scale production and distribution center at 2000 Troy Avenue in New Castle. This move centralized donut production, leading many franchisees to stop baking in their individual stores and instead purchase goods directly from The Commissary.

Franchise Stores Remain Open, Company Assures Customers

In response to the news, Jack’s Donuts took to its official Facebook page to address customer concerns directly. The company’s statement was emphatic: the bankruptcy filing does not affect independently owned and operated franchise locations.

“Our stores remain open, our teams are at work, and our commitment to quality, tradition, and community remains unchanged,” the statement read.

The company clarified that the bankruptcy proceedings only involve the franchisor and specific related entities, shielding the local store owners from the action. The heartfelt message ended with a reaffirmation of its 60-year legacy, stating, “As we move through this process, our focus is the same: to ensure that the Jack’s experience continues for generations to come.”

This assurance means that for customers, the immediate Jack’s Donuts experience at their local neighborhood shop should see no disruption.
