Golden State’s Lineup Shuffle Stuns Chicago, Seals Winning Road Trip

In a season defined by injury and inconsistency, the Golden State Warriors authored a stunning chapter of resilience Sunday night. Taking on the Chicago Bulls at the United Center, the Dubs not only unveiled their 13th different starting lineup this season but also clinched a winning record on a grueling three-game road trip with a 112-102 victory.

The victory was improbable. The Warriors were without their heart and soul, as Stephen Curry (quad), Draymond Green (knee), and veteran Al Horford (sciatica) all remained sidelined. Curry missed the entire trip, while Green logged only nine minutes in the first game. Facing an 0-3 road trip seemed a real possibility.

Instead, head coach Steve Kerr turned to a previously unthinkable starting five: Pat Spencer, Jimmy Butler (returning from a knee injury), Buddy Hield, Will Richard, and Quinten Post. This group, led by the emergent Spencer, provided the spark. After a career-high 19 points and seven assists in a win over Cleveland, Spencer continued his confident play, facilitating the offense and playing tenacious defense. The deep reserves, including Gui Santos, have stepped up massively in the stars’ absences.

“Our group has tremendous resolve,” Kerr said post-game. “When guys go down, the next man up mentality isn’t just a cliché for this team. They believe.”

While the makeshift starters built momentum, the game highlighted a concerning trend for Golden State’s usual contributors. The Warriors’ young core of Brandin Podziemski, Jonathan Kuminga, and Moses Moody found themselves out of the starting lineup for the first time this season—and with reason. Kuminga has struggled mightily from the floor, shooting 8-of-32 in his last three games. Moody’s three-point shot has been cold, and Podziemski has battled turnover issues. Their combined minus-34 rating over a recent stretch forced Kerr’s hand.

“We need more from them, plain and simple,” Butler stated. “We have all the confidence in the world in those guys, but winning requires everyone. Tonight, the new guys set the tone, and we all followed.”

The Bulls, mired in a now-seven-game losing streak, could not capitalize on Golden State’s roster chaos. The Warriors’ defensive effort, particularly in the fourth quarter, sealed the improbable winning road trip. One game after being one defensive stop away from a 2-0 trip, they finished the job in Chicago.

The victory raises critical questions and offers hope. Can the Warriors survive this injury plague? The answer, for now, is a resounding yes, thanks to astonishing depth. However, for Golden State to maintain momentum, they will need Podziemski, Kuminga, and Moody to rediscover their form and provide crucial support to Jimmy Butler and the eventual returning stars.

The takeaway is powerful: even at less than full strength, the Warriors’ culture of “next man up” and relentless effort makes them a dangerous opponent for any team in the league.
