Two years after the tragic death of Ajike “AJ” Owens, her mother, Pamela Dias, still lives with the heartbreak of losing her daughter — a devoted mother of four whose life was cut short in her own Florida neighborhood.
“The pain has not subsided,” Dias told USA TODAY. “I miss my daughter tremendously. I miss hearing her voice.”
Owens, 35, was fatally shot on June 2, 2023, in Ocala, Florida. Her death — the result of a confrontation with a neighbor — has become the focus of Netflix’s powerful new documentary, “The Perfect Neighbor”, which is now streaming worldwide.
A Mother’s Unbearable Loss:The Perfect Neighbour
Ajike and her mother shared an extremely close bond, speaking every day despite living in different cities. Now, Dias lives in Ocala, raising Owens’ four children — Isaac (14), Israel (12), Afrika (9), and Titus (6) — as they struggle to cope with the loss of their beloved mother.
“Seeing the pain in their eyes is never-ending,” she said. “They are so young, and no child should have to experience that kind of heartbreak.”
What Happened on That Tragic Day:The Perfect Neighbour
On June 2, 2023, Owens went to her neighbor Susan Lorincz’s house to confront her about how she had been treating Owens’ children. Lorincz, who is white, had often called the police about the neighborhood kids, claiming they were being noisy or trespassing.
The argument quickly escalated. Lorincz accused Owens, who was Black, of throwing a yard sign at her — something Owens denied. Moments later, Lorincz fired her .380-caliber handgun through her closed front door, striking Owens in the chest and killing her instantly.
Lorincz later claimed self-defense, but a Florida jury rejected that argument. She was convicted of manslaughter and is now serving a 25-year prison sentence, according to USA TODAY’s coverage of the verdict.

Netflix’s “The Perfect Neighbor” uses real police bodycam and interrogation footage to show the raw aftermath of the shooting. Viewers see Owens’ children and relatives learn the heartbreaking news that she did not survive.
Director Geeta Gandbhir says Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, wanted the documentary to be brutally honest.
“If we allow things like this to remain in the dark, they will continue to happen,” Gandbhir said. “But when people see the truth, they’re inspired to take action.”
Dias drew strength from Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till, whose open-casket decision in 1955 showed the world the brutality of racial violence.
“Like Mamie Till, Pamela wanted the world to know her truth,” Gandbhir added.
Heartbreaking Moments Captured on Film:The Perfect Neighbour
The film includes deeply emotional moments, such as Owens’ son Isaac running to a neighbor’s house begging them to call 911. Her younger son, Israel, asks through tears if his mom is still moving.
Their father — whose name has not been released — is seen receiving the devastating news and then breaking it to his children:
“Mom’s not coming back anymore,” he says, holding them close as they cry.
Dias, learning the news over the phone, can be heard crying uncontrollably. “My heart was broken — just shattered,” she recalled.

Despite her unimaginable loss, Pamela Dias says the documentary is not just about her family’s grief. It’s a call to action — about racism, gun violence, and the misuse of laws like Florida’s Stand Your Ground.
“It’s more than my daughter being murdered,” Dias said. “It’s a message about racism, bias, and how guns in the wrong hands can turn deadly. I realized I had a responsibility to share my daughter’s story if I ever expected true change.”
Finding Strength and Hope:The Perfect Neighbour
Today, Dias continues to raise her grandchildren, who she says are “still in pain but very resilient.”
Their community has rallied around them, offering emotional and financial support as they try to move forward.
Owens’ mother believes her daughter’s legacy will help bring awareness to injustice and inspire reform.
“She always said, ‘The world is going to know my name,’” Dias remembered. “And now, they do. I just wish it didn’t have to happen this way.”
Even in tragedy, Dias finds a small light of hope.
“If the world cares, there’s hope for real change,” she said.
