President Donald Trump has no clear legal authority to strip citizenship from the New York-born comedian and critic, but his threat marks a new extreme in his targeting of opponents.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump escalated his long-running feud with Rosie O’Donnell on Saturday, threatening to revoke the U.S. citizenship of the actor and comedian—a move with no clear legal precedent.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship. She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

O’Donnell, who was born in New York and currently resides in Ireland, fired back on Instagram, calling Trump “a dangerous old soulless man with dementia who lacks empathy, compassion, and basic humanity.” She added that the president “has always hated the fact that I see him for who he is—a criminal con man, sexual abusing liar out to harm our nation to serve himself.”

The White House did not clarify whether Trump’s threat was serious or how he would enforce it. Legal experts say the president has no authority to unilaterally revoke the citizenship of a natural-born U.S. citizen like O’Donnell.

Trump’s administration has previously sought to narrow citizenship rights, including attempting to end birthright citizenship for children of non-citizens and increasing denaturalization efforts for naturalized immigrants convicted of crimes. However, stripping citizenship from a native-born American would face immediate constitutional challenges.

A Years-Long Feud Reignites

The clash between Trump and O’Donnell dates back to 2006, when O’Donnell, then a co-host on The View, criticized Trump’s “moral compass.” Trump retaliated by calling her “a woman out of control.” The feud has flared repeatedly over the years, with O’Donnell remaining one of Trump’s most vocal critics.

Trump’s latest attack comes amid his broader efforts to redefine American identity, including targeting political opponents and immigrants. Earlier this year, he signed an executive order attempting to restrict birthright citizenship, though courts have blocked its implementation.

As legal challenges mount and O’Donnell vows to resist, the president’s threat against her citizenship underscores his willingness to weaponize nationality in his battles against critics.
