A New Way to Play
The wait for Grand Theft Auto VI is reaching a fever pitch, but Rockstar Games has just dropped a massive surprise for fans still patrolling the streets of Los Santos. Starting today, June 18, the studio is offering a free upgrade to the current-gen versions of Grand Theft Auto V for millions of players.

For years, the leap to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of GTA V required a separate purchase. That wall has officially come down. Whether you’ve been holding onto your trusty PlayStation 4 disc or rocking a digital copy on Xbox One, you can now experience the definitive version of Los Santos without spending a dime.

How to claim your upgrade:
PlayStation: If you own the physical or digital PS4 version, head to the product page on the PlayStation Store to download the PS5 version. Note: If you are using a disc, it must remain in your console to verify ownership.
Xbox: Players with a digital copy of GTA V on Xbox One can grab the Series X/S edition directly through their “Full Library” in the console’s settings.
Important Note for Xbox Players: Due to platform limitations, the free upgrade does not apply to physical Xbox One discs.

Why Upgrade Now?
With the massive Kortz Center Heist update arriving in July, there has never been a better time to optimize your setup. The current-gen versions offer:
Visual Fidelity: Up to 4K resolution with HDR support.
Performance: Fluid 60 frames-per-second gameplay.
Immersive Features: Ray tracing, improved textures, and significantly faster loading times.
PS5 Exclusive: Full support for 3D audio and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback.
PC players aren’t being left out, either. Those using the legacy version can now transition to the Enhanced edition for free, unlocking the same ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination seen on consoles.

Preparing for the Future
Rockstar is clearly focused on keeping the community engaged as the industry gears up for the November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI. By offering these upgrades at no cost, they are ensuring that every player—whether they are returning for a nostalgia trip or just diving into the story for the first time—is playing the best possible version of the game.
