Riley Gaines Reveals Harrowing Campus Attack, Fears for Safety After Kirk Assassination

In the wake of the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, his close friend and fellow advocate Riley Gaines is breaking her silence on the violent threats facing conservatives on American college campuses. Gaines is sharing the chilling details of a 2023 incident she describes as a hostage situation, drawing a direct line to the current climate of fear.

The ordeal occurred during a Turning Point USA event at San Francisco State University. Gaines, a former NCAA swimmer who gained national recognition for speaking out on women’s sports, was attacked by a group of radical trans student activists. What was supposed to be a speaking event quickly devolved into chaos.

“I [was] so disoriented, you have men in dresses and women with beards. I’m confused, fists are flying in my face,” Gaines told Fox News Digital.

A mob of protesters stormed the venue, disrupting her speech with aggressive chanting, flickering the lights, and physically surrounding her. A plainclothes police officer eventually extracted her from the scrum, only to lead her into a hallway where more protesters were waiting. For her safety, she was forced to barricade herself in a classroom for hours.

The situation grew even more sinister. Gaines alleges that protesters outside the door demanded money if she wanted “to see my family again.” Most alarmingly, she claims campus police refused to disperse the hostile crowd, allegedly telling her they “couldn’t be seen as antagonistic to the transgender community.”

“I was scared. I was scared for my life,” Gaines recounted. “I broke down in tears and I looked at the officer and I said, ‘I just want to go home,’ and he looked at me and he said, ‘that’s a bit selfish, don’t you think we want to go home too?’”

She was ultimately freed only after the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) arrived. While Gaines emphasizes she is pro-law enforcement, she has severe criticisms of the university police’s failure to protect her. She was dismayed to discover that many of the same officers were on duty when she returned to the campus with Charlie Kirk months later.

“There was no accountability,” she stated. “There was nothing done to the students, to the university administrators who enabled this, there was nothing done to the campus police who facilitated an environment where the students were able to get away with this.”

The assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University has explosively heightened concerns about security for conservative speakers. Kirk was gunned down on September 10th after taking a question about transgender mass murderers. His alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, had a transgender partner and allegedly texted a confession, stating he “had enough of [Kirk’s] hatred.”

Gaines fears that in the aftermath, universities will simply disinvite conservative voices rather than address the root problem of campus violence. This poses a direct challenge to her own work; she has ten college stops scheduled for the fall, some of which were intended to be with Kirk.

“I hate to admit it, but it has me afraid, especially as I’m about to enter into this new stage of life where I’m due with a baby girl any day now… I have to consider my family,” Gaines admitted.

Beyond the fear, she is grappling with the profound loss of a mentor and friend. She credits Kirk with giving her her start as a speaker and recalls his unique ability to connect with and make everyone feel seen.

“He had this ability to connect with people that very, very few people have… I think his legacy will live on, but it’s going to require more and more people to be bold in the process,” Gaines recalled.

Her story is a powerful testament to the escalating tensions on campus and a heartbreaking tribute to a lost leader in the fight for free speech.
