ATLANTA – The preseason matchup between the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons was suspended in the fourth quarter after Lions safety Morice Norris suffered a serious injury and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
The incident occurred with 14:50 remaining in the game when Norris attempted to tackle Falcons rookie Nathan Carter. The hard collision caused Norris’ head to snap back violently, leaving him motionless on the field. Medical staff immediately attended to him for 20 minutes before he was stabilized and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.
Morice Norris in Stable Condition – Team Provides Update
The Detroit Lions later confirmed that Norris is in stable condition with “feeling and movement in all extremities.” He will remain hospitalized overnight for observation.
The Lions organization expressed gratitude to the Falcons, EMS team, and hospital staff for their swift response.

Game Suspended as Players Unite in Support
Following the injury, both teams gathered on the field in a show of solidarity, holding hands as Norris was loaded into the ambulance. When play briefly resumed, the Falcons intentionally let the clock run before officials announced the game’s suspension.
Lions coach Dan Campbell praised Falcons coach Raheem Morris for agreeing to halt the game, stating:
“Raheem Morris is the ultimate class act. We agreed it just didn’t feel right to finish that game.”
Players React: “That’s Bigger Than Football”
Lions quarterback Kyle Allen described the emotional impact on the sidelines:
“It’s never good when they bring out the stretchers. We just started praying for him… You could just look in everyone’s eyes and see it wasn’t worth it.”
Falcons receiver Casey Washington echoed the sentiment:
“That’s somebody’s life, and that’s bigger than football.”
Morice Norris’ NFL Journey
The 24-year-old safety, an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State (2024), spent time on Detroit’s practice squad before making the active roster last season. He re-signed with the Lions in January after appearing in two games in 2023.
A Reminder of Football’s Risks
This incident follows similar preseason cancellations in recent years, including injuries to Isaiah Bolden (Patriots, 2023) and Daewood Davis (Dolphins, 2023). It also brings back memories of Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest in 2023, highlighting the physical dangers of the sport.
Coach Campbell reflected on the moment:
“It’s an eye-opener… It puts things in perspective. The silver lining is the brotherhood—seeing both teams come together means a lot.”
As the NFL community rallies around Norris, the focus remains on his recovery and long-term health.
