Dallas Cowboys Mourn the Sudden Death of Defensive End Marshawn Kneeland
(FRISCO, Texas) – The Dallas Cowboys organization and the NFL community are in mourning after the tragic death of second-year defensive end Marshawn Kneeland. He was 24 years old.
The team announced the devastating news in an official statement on Thursday morning.
“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the statement read. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

Kneeland, a promising young talent, was the Cowboys’ second-round pick (No. 56 overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan University. His potential was on full display just days ago in the team’s Monday night game against the Arizona Cardinals, where he scored the Cowboys’ first touchdown of the game by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone.
The tragic news comes as the team is on its bye week, with players and staff away from the facility. They are not scheduled to return to practice until Monday, leaving the organization to grapple with the loss remotely.
In his brief professional career, Kneeland showed flashes of the player he was destined to become. This season, he appeared in several games, accumulating 15 tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss, and six quarterback hurries, despite missing two contests due to injury. His rookie campaign was also impacted by a knee injury that sidelined him for six games, but he still managed 17 tackles and a fumble recovery.
His football journey was one of consistent achievement. Before his collegiate career, Kneeland was a record-setting star at Godwin Heights High School in Wyoming, Michigan, where he set school records for tackles, sacks, and tackles for loss.
At Western Michigan, he developed into a formidable defensive force. Over 38 collegiate games, he amassed 27.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three pass deflections. His performance in his final season earned him a second-team All-Mid-American Conference selection in 2023, finishing with 57 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 7.5 tackles for loss in just nine games.
This is the second time in recent years the Cowboys franchise has been struck by tragedy during a season. In 2012, linebacker Jerry Brown died in a single-car accident while teammate Josh Brent was driving.
