A Legend Comes Home: Marc-Andre Fleury Signs PTO with Penguins for Preseason Farewell

In a move that has sent waves of joy through the hockey world, the Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the iconic return of goaltending legend Marc-Andre Fleury. The team has signed the future Hall-of-Famer to a professional tryout (PTO), setting the stage for one final, magical appearance in the black and gold.

Penguins President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, Kyle Dubas, made the emotional announcement, confirming that Fleury will join the team for practice and, most notably, will play in parts of the Penguins’ preseason game on Saturday, September 27th, at PPG Paints Arena.

“The entire Penguins organization is honored to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh,” stated Dubas. He emphasized that this move transcends statistics. “Everyone witnessed how beloved and respected Marc is in the game of hockey, but the adoration goes beyond his accolades and career. Marc means so much to our team, our fans, and the City of Pittsburgh because of the person he is.”

This homecoming marks a full-circle moment for a player who is synonymous with the modern-era Penguins. Drafted first overall by Pittsburgh in 2003, Fleury backstopped the team to its greatest successes over 13 spectacular seasons. His incredible tenure included three Stanley Cup championships (2009, 2016, and 2017), cementing his legacy as a winner.

His name is etched all over the Penguins’ record books. Fleury remains the franchise’s all-time leader for goaltenders in nearly every major category, including games played (691), wins (375), and shutouts (44). These records are a testament to his durability, skill, and consistency during his defining years in Pittsburgh.

After his storied time with the Penguins, Fleury’s journey continued with remarkable chapters for the Vegas Golden Knights, where he won the Vezina Trophy, the Chicago Blackhawks, and most recently, the Minnesota Wild. Despite his success elsewhere, his heart has always remained connected to the city where he grew from a highly-touted prospect into a hockey icon. Marc Andre Fleury

This PTO is not about earning a roster spot for the upcoming season. Instead, it is a classy and deserved tribute orchestrated by the Penguins’ management. It is an opportunity for the fans, the city, and the organization to properly celebrate Fleury’s immense contributions and to say thank you. It offers #29 one more chance to skate onto the PPG Paints Arena ice, not as a visitor, but as a Penguin, receiving the roaring ovation he so richly deserves from the “black and gold faithful.”

This preseason game will be more than an exhibition; it will be a celebration of a legendary career and a beloved athlete’s profound connection to a city. It’s a storybook ending for one of the most charismatic and successful players to ever grace the NHL. Marc Andre Fleury
