In an extraordinary act of philanthropy, billionaire MacKenzie Scott is transforming higher education for Black students single-handedly. This fall, Scott has donated a staggering $700 million to more than a dozen Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), marking one of the most significant financial injections these institutions have ever received.

These are not just donations; they are monumental, unrestricted gifts that are arriving at a critical time. The funds empower schools to write their own futures, free from the constraints that have historically limited their growth.

Historic Gifts, Immediate Impact

The wave of giving continued recently with massive, single-day contributions:

• Prairie View A&M University in Texas received an incredible $63 million.
• Bowie State University in Maryland was awarded a $50 million gift.
• Philander Smith University in Arkansas was granted $19 million.

For Bowie State, this was the 15th such gift from Scott this school year. The university’s President, Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, expressed profound gratitude, stating the generosity arrives at a “pivotal moment” in the school’s 160-year history.

“It empowers us to expand access, elevate our research and academic excellence, and uplift generations of students who will lead, serve & innovate,” Breaux said. “Higher education is the pathway to upward social mobility for our students and the communities we serve, and, with this gift, their futures are brighter than ever.”

A Nationwide Catalyst for Excellence

The impact of Scott’s philanthropy is being felt across the entire HBCU community, from Alabama to Virginia. The average gift size is around $47 million, providing a financial foundation that many of these schools have only dreamed of.

Norfolk State University in Virginia, which received $50 million, announced the funds would “catapult” it into its next level of excellence.

Some of the most notable contributions include:

• Howard University: Received the largest single gift of $80 million in November.
• The United Negro College Fund (UNCF): Awarded a “transformational” $70 million to strengthen its network of HBCUs.

An overjoyed Michael L. Lomax, President and CEO of UNCF, did not hold back his praise, calling Scott “Saint MacKenzie Scott.”

“She is rewriting the book on philanthropy, not just in this country, but in the world,” Lomax told ABC News.

A Turning Point Amidst Historical Underfunding

Scott’s historic giving spree comes as HBCUs, long underfunded by the federal government—a problem experts link to America’s history of racial inequality—are finally receiving renewed attention.

In a significant parallel development, the Department of Education recently redirected over $400 million to HBCUs, acknowledging their commitment to educational outcomes. This move increases total HBCU federal funding for fiscal year 2025 to $1.3 billion.

Lodriguez V. Murray, UNCF’s senior vice president for public policy, called the additional federal funding “nothing short of a godsend for HBCUs.”
