New York Giants Fire Head Coach Brian Daboll After Disappointing Tenure

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – In a decisive move signaling a new direction, the New York Giants have relieved head coach Brian Daboll of his duties. The firing, announced on Monday, comes after a season plagued by blown leads and mounting losses, culminating in a defeat to the Chicago Bears where the Giants squandered another double-digit advantage.

Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch issued a joint statement, expressing their disappointment and acknowledging the fanbase‘s frustration.

“The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise,” the statement read. “We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”

Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who has been a finalist for several head coaching positions in recent years, will take over as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Schoen Stays, Will Lead Coaching Search

While Daboll is out, General Manager Joe Schoen will retain his position and will be tasked with leading the search for the next head coach. The owners expressed confidence in Schoen’s ability to build a competitive roster.

“We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development,” Mara said. “Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibility for those results.”

Tisch added that the decision, while difficult, was necessary to “move forward.”

A Promising Start Ends in Historic Collapse

The decision marks a stunning fall for Daboll, who was named the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year after a surprising 9-7-1 season and a playoff victory in his first year. However, the team’s performance sharply declined after that promising start.

The Giants’ record since the beginning of the 2023 season is a dismal 11-33. This year, the team has started 2-8 for the third consecutive season. Daboll’s overall record with the Giants finishes at 20-40-1, a .336 winning percentage that places him among the least successful coaches in the franchise’s modern history.

The 2024 season has been particularly brutal, characterized by historic late-game collapses. In Sunday’s loss, the Giants became just the second team since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger to lose two games in a single season after holding a lead of at least 10 points with under four minutes remaining.

Turmoil On and Off the Field

Daboll’s tenure was also marked by internal strife and controversy. His relationship with former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale ended in an ugly split after the 2023 season. Daboll was also fined $100,000 earlier this year for inappropriately approaching the medical tent while rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart was being evaluated for a concussion.

Dart, whom Daboll was credited with advocating to draft, suffered his fourth concussion evaluation of the year during the Bears game, adding to the team’s woes. Reports also indicated that at one point, GM Joe Schoen had to monitor the coaching headsets to evaluate communication, and Daboll was seen throwing a tablet at former quarterback Daniel Jones.

With the search for a new leader now beginning, the Giants hope this difficult decision will be the first step back toward the success their loyal fans expect.
