CLAIRTON, PA – A devastating explosion at the US Steel Clairton Coke Works plant has left one person dead, dozens injured, and at least two missing, authorities confirmed. The blast sent thick black smoke into the sky, visible for miles, as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
What Happened?
The explosion occurred earlier today, with witnesses describing a thunder-like boom that shook nearby buildings. Zachary Buday, a worker near the scene, told Pittsburgh Action News 4:
“It felt like thunder. Shook the scaffold, shook my chest, then the building. Then we saw the smoke coming up from the steel mill.”
Sky 4, Pittsburgh’s only news helicopter, captured footage of firefighters battling flames while ambulances transported the injured. The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
Casualties and Response
- 1 confirmed fatality
- Dozens injured, with varying severity
- At least 2 workers unaccounted for
- Emergency crews on high alert
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed his administration is coordinating with local officials, while Lt. Governor Austin Davis urged residents to avoid the area to allow first responders to work efficiently.
History of Environmental Concerns
The Clairton Coke Works has faced multiple lawsuits over pollution violations in recent years. In 2019, the plant settled a lawsuit for $8.5 million, agreeing to reduce soot and toxic emissions. A 2018 fire had previously damaged pollution controls, leading to further legal action.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet determined the explosion’s cause but are examining equipment failures or potential safety breaches. Updates will follow as more details emerge.
