In Stunning Reversal, Kilmar Abrego Garcia Taken Into ICE Custody at Routine Check-In

(BALTIMORE) – In a devastating blow to his family and supporters, Kilmar Abrego Garcia was taken into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on Monday during what was supposed to be a routine check-in appointment. This shocking development comes just days after his emotional release from federal custody and reunification with his family.

The appointment at the ICE office in Baltimore was a standard condition of the parole he was granted on Friday. Typically, these check-ins are administrative, but Abrego Garcia’s legal team from the Legal Aid Justice Center feared the worst after the Trump administration signaled its intent over the weekend to deport him to Uganda, a country with no known connection to him.

“There was no need to take him into ICE detention. … The only reason they took him into detention was to punish him,” for exercising his constitutional rights to speak out and challenge his deportation proceedings, stated Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, one of Abrego Garcia’s attorneys, on Monday morning.

Sandoval-Moshenberg reported that ICE officers refused to provide a reason for the detention or disclose where they were taking Abrego Garcia, leaving his family and legal team in a state of anguish and uncertainty.

Just hours before his appointment, a hopeful Abrego Garcia stood surrounded by family, faith leaders, and his legal team at a news conference, advocating for his permanent freedom.

“My name is Kilmar Abrego Garcia, and I want you to remember this, remember that I am free and I was able to be reunited with my family,” he said in Spanish, with a translator repeating his words in English.

He expressed profound gratitude to the community that rallied for him, stating, “This was a miracle. Thank you to God and thank you to the community. I want to thank each and every one of you who marched, lift your voices, never stop praying and continue to fight in my name.”

This detention marks the latest chapter in a long and painful ordeal for Abrego Garcia. His case gained national attention after he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador by ICE in March, a direct violation of a 2019 court order. After a protracted legal battle, he was returned to the U.S. in June, only to be immediately arrested on human smuggling charges out of Tennessee, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

This latest action by immigration authorities is seen by advocates as a punitive measure for his public fight against a system that has repeatedly failed him. His story highlights the complexities and perceived injustices within the U.S. immigration system, where individuals can be caught in a prolonged cycle of detention and legal challenges.

The community and his legal representatives vow to continue their fight for his release and permanent stay in the United States.
